The site of 1120 Avenue of the Americas has a rich history, once home to the iconic Hippodrome Theater.
Opened in 1905, it was the world's largest theater, featuring a massive 100x200-foot stage designed by Frederic Thompson and Jay Morgan.
It hosted everything from circuses and musical revues to famous acts like Harry Houdini, who made an elephant disappear here in 1918.
Despite its popularity, high operating costs led to its closure and demolition in August 1939.
The current 21-story Class A office building was constructed on the site, opening in 1952 (designed by Kahn & Jacobs). Acquired by Edison Properties in 1978, it underwent significant modernization between 2006 and 2014, including a new glass facade and lobby redesigned by MdeAS Architects (with SUPERSTRUCTURES handling restoration). The building, known as The Hippodrome Center, respectfully features a portrait of the original theater in its lobby.
Offering approximately 615,000 to 680,000 square feet of modern office space, it provides amenities like 24-hour security, a parking garage, event space, and "ElevatedNY" co-working facilities. It houses a diverse tenant base, including BBC Studios, Citizen Watch, Chase, and TD Bank. Strategically located in Midtown Manhattan between Fifth and Sixth Avenues, it offers excellent accessibility to major transportation hubs including Grand Central Terminal, Penn Station, and the Port Authority Bus Terminal.
The Hippodrome Building offers a total of approximately 650,000 SF of office space on 21 floors.
The Hippodrome Centre attracts a diverse array of prestigious global tenants, reflecting a vibrant cross-section of industries. Tenants include:
